Bean Town

So I'm out in Boston for the summer! I've been looking forward to giving this city another shot after the storms of winter and so far I must say its a totally different place. I had come to know this place as somewhere with snow piled up on the sidewalks and few people exploring the streets. Now its actually warm and people all about?

My first weekend here I had the knack to go somewhere. It was definitely driven by the fact that I'm losing my car this weekend, but I had to get out and be somewhere I knew I probably won't have a chance to be the rest of the summer (hopefully not though). So started up the escort and went to Cape Cod. My new roommate, Mike, joined along in the adventure. Surprisingly the drive to Provincetown town all the way at the tip of the cape was only 2 hours. Unknowingly Provincetown was having a Portugese festival. It was a very relaxed, laid back vacation town that had that ocean vibe of somewhere you can forget everything. Would have liked to spend more time there, but after our lobster rolls we were quick to get in the ocean. Along the entire eastern side of the Cape is Cape Cod National Sea shore. We found a great beach that was pretty much deserted of people. The water was fairly cold (58 degrees) but I still managed to jump in three times. My first attempt at body surfing was a success. It must be that surfing and reading waves is like riding a bike, because its been awhile since I've done it but it came right back to me. All in all, somewhere I'd like to go again but maybe for a camping trip, bonfire and a day full of ocean swimming.

Sooo the real reason I'm out here is co-op. Started work at Continuum last week and its been flying by. The consultancy side of things (projects, clients, expected work) has been about to what I expected. However, the office environment is a lot different than what I'm used to (eleven.) Still feel like the intern, but starting to get to know some of my co-workers a bit better and having fun designing and all...

It's all about surfaces!

Liked what I saw today from Ronix and Liquid Force. Wakeboarding is starting to move further away from the skate style and start to be defined as its own. Its almost like a bridge between surfing and skating, but with a technical aspect. I like the graphics that used bright colors and big text.

Update. THE CHAIR STUDIO, the most over glorified class in our college curriculum. Not saying that I dont appreciate furniture, just not the process behind a college portfolio piece chair. Everyone has there own take on what a chair should be and as a student designer theres many different directions to take such a vaguely defined product. Weather its main focus be on ergonomics, style or manufacturing process it has to be a chair and you must be able to sit on it. I could have made a chair in 3 grade and its possible that it may have turned out looking the same way. However, because of the explorative process behind designing such an object in 10 weeks there have been many self benefiting aspects. For example, wherever I've gone the past few weeks people have been staring at me turning over chairs examining its structure and form, the idea of Scandinavian design is much more clear, and i'm now extremely picky on where I sit down.

Since the storm has settled, I'm going to take the time to look back on fall quarter. I still cant believe the mass amount of work that was done in 10 weeks. Its not stop go go go, but so worth it when your finished. Theres no time for second guessing, and finally I feel like I've hit the point in my design confidence where I can live with my gut feeling. Sure there are things I would change now, but knowing the time crunch we're all under im satisfied with my final result.

I used the phrase "throw it down" a lot. It always reminded me of a basketball player throwing down a slam dunk or a hockey player dropping the gloves. Its a full commitment in a forced rationalized way. With any sketch, render or graphic layout I just try to throw it down then refine when I have the time.

As far as the final studio project went, I feel like its something I could take to a park commissioner and present the concept. Exactly how it would work I'd say its about 80% there. However, I really want to explore more into the slow water filtration and the off the grid sustainability. While I've had a lot of help from some of my professors grasping how this could work, its definitely something that needs an in depth (possible thesis) approach.

I still have a lot of organizing and refining to do so its something I can present in a portfolio sort of way, but a long the goal of this project was so it could be something that would stand out. I think its biggest success is its ability to go beyond the traditional industrial design: from architecture, system, and finally to product.

Below are some pictures I took today at Rumpke landfill outside of Cincinnati. The field trip was organized by one of my professors. It was interesting to see where all of our garbage really goes and how it gets buried. I guess I've always known but its never really had as much of an impact as seeing and hearing our tour guide mention the garbage you throw away does not get recycled and it goes here. Its hard to imagine all those cans that I've just been to lazy to take out to be recycled are a part of that hill. Hmm...

It's been too long since i've had a chance to take my camera out, so this was refreshing. It was a bus tour and I was sitting all the way in the back so I was able to go from side to side with the windows down. I felt the outside of the hill was actually restored to be pretty natural, so it was an interesting mix of machine and nature, especially after being stuck in DAAP for so long.
